A joke with a very bad ending: Rigoletto mocks, scoffs at political correctness, and makes jokes at others’ expense without facing real consequences – until he is cursed by Count Monterone. Rigoletto takes this curse very seriously – unlike his master, the charming Duke of Mantua, who knows how to enjoy life without restraint: women, alcohol, gambling, wild parties – anything that pleases him.
Gilda, Rigoletto’s innocent and naive daughter, becomes the Duke’s next victim. The desperate father cannot leave Gilda’s dishonor unpunished and plots revenge: he hires a professional assassin to rid himself of the Duke. But he does not know that Gilda is ready to sacrifice herself for the Duke.
Rigoletto learns one thing in the cruelest possible way: he who laughs last, laughs best.
